Raffingora – An 83-year-old woman is over the moon after receiving a brand new wheelchair from the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Marian Chombo, to help her mobility.

Emma Kadzungu of Kamwaza Township said she was elated to receive the gift of the wheelchair.

“I was facing challenges with my legs for the past two years. I overburdened my family members who used to carry me around or push me in a borrowed wheelbarrow. I thank God for sending people like Minister Chombo. Her donation of a wheelchair to me was timely. It came at a critical point in my life when I was becoming a huge burden to my family who had to help me move around and sometimes they would push me in a borrowed wheelbarrow for me to get medical attention at the local clinic,” an elated Gogo Kadzungu told this publication as she was relaxing under a shade of a mango tree at her home in Raffingora recently.

Chombo who is the Zvimba North Constituency House of Assembly Representative is also ZANU PF Mashonaland West Women’s League Secretary for People with Disabilities.

Minister Chombo sourced the wheelchair after an SOS from Kadzungu sent through the Raffingora ZANU PF District Chairperson, Asenari. The elderly woman had not been able to walk for more than two years and her family members would carry her when she wanted to go to the clinic or church.

Residents of Raffingora thanked Chombo for coming to the aid of Kadzungu.

“We are so happy with what our MP did.  She didn’t do it only for her but for the community as a whole, as now it’s easier for Gogo to visit us unlike in the past where she was usually confined inside the house” a neighbour, Rose Chikoto said.

Kadzungu also received some groceries for her family from Chombo who was accompanied by Zvimba ZANU PF District Coordinating Committee Chairperson Bywell Mbiri who has been supporting the family with monthly supplies of maize from his farm.

Most people with disabilities are failing to access wheelchairs due to their high cost.
