Gweru City Council (GCC) yesterday commissioned a new refuse truck in a bid to keep the city clean by using the truck to collect refuse in the surrounding areas.

The refuse truck is a 19 cubic metre and it is hoped for going a long way in saving the city especially in areas where bigger trucks could not manoeuvre through the roads.

Gweru Mayor, Josiah Makombe in his speech said that the local authority is responsible for ensuring that there is machinery to keep the city clean.

“You all agree with me that for the city to be clean there is need for the local authority to ensure that we have machinery to cater for that, hence with that in mind we are commission a new truck.

“May I highlight that it is our duty as residents to ensure that the city is clean each and every day therefore we have to take measures to ensure that we correctly dispose waste,” said the Mayor.

In the same event, the city fathers handed over goods donated for cyclone Idai victims.

The Mayor further said that despite the happiness of acquiring new resources they do not forget their relatives who lost their property due to cyclone Idai.

“In the happiness of acquiring new resources we do not forget our relatives who lost their lives and property due to cyclone Idai.

“We still remember them and due to that we as we celebrate our achievements as a local authority today we have decided to hand over goods donated for cyclone Idai,” he said.

The donations will be handed over to the Minister of State so that he will give them to the beneficiaries in Chimanimani and Chipinge who were affected by cyclone Idai.
